Properties of Nanometer Zinc Oxide

Nanometer Zinc Oxide(here shortened for Nano ZnO) is white hexagonal crystal or powder, tasteless and none toxic. The particle size is nanometer, that is the great feature. Compared with the Indirect Zinc oxide (here shortened for Indirect ZnO), the surface area is large and the chemical activity is high. Due to the enlarged surface area and retained a certain proportion active substance, the purity of Nano ZnO is accordingly reduced to 95%. But the surface area and active substance increased to the first considerable position.

It also has a photochemical effect and excellent ultraviolet light shielding performance. The ultraviolet shielding rate can reach 98%. And the relative density is 5.6% and the refractive index is 2.008---2.09. It can be dissolved in acid, sodium hydroxide, amine oxide and insoluble in water, ethanol and ammonium water. It belongs to amphoteric oxide and it turns to zinc carbonate appearing yellow color when it absorb carbon dioxide and water in air. When heated, it turns to yellow color and when cooled, it returned to white colour again. It doesn't change to black color when it meets hydrogen sulfide if it doesn't through ultraviolet light.

The drillability of Nano ZnO is good and dispersibility is excellent. Due to small particle size and structure loosen, osteoporosis, it enlarged the nitrogen adsorption surface area and distributed evenly when it used in rubber compound vulcanized. It enlarged the contact with the hydrogen sulphide and improved the interface reaction. The conversion rate increased when the zinc oxide turns to zinc sulfide due to the Nano ZnO has the active substances for catalytic effect.

Due to the excellent properties of Nano ZnO when used in rubber compound making products, especially used in transparent rubber making products, these rubber making products have such advantages, 1. Smooth appearance 2. Improved cleanliness and mechanical strength 3. Wear-resistant and high-temperature resistance 4. Delayed effectiveness 5. Improved technical function. If adding "high speed promoting agent" such as sulphenamides in rubber compound making, the Nano ZnO can improve the physical and mechanical properties of vulcanized rubber. It also can extend the scorch time and processing security without reversion phenomenon. The Nano ZnO is the most suitable product for the tire industry, such as the diagonal tire, radial tire and solid tire production application.

In addition, the Nano ZnO has the effect of antimicrobial cured flavor and the efficacy of anti-enzymes. It can be widely used in rubber compound products making. Besides due to the nano-particle size, high activity and large surface area, the Nano ZnO dosage can be reduced 1/3 or 1/2 compared with the Indirect ZnO dosage amount under guaranteed the same quality. Now the Nano ZnO gets a good response when used in rubber compound processing. It is accepted by a large number of Chinese tire or rubber factories.

Research of Nanometer Zinc oxide in rubber application
Due to the nanometer-particle size and large specific surface effect, the Nanometer zinc oxide(here shortened for Nano ZnO) is not only widely used in rubber vulcanization as one high active agent, but also used as the role of multi-functional additives for its high abrasion resistance, improved rubber-skeletal material adhesive force and reducing heat. The Nano ZnO improved the resistance to deformation and remains the best features when aging. It has a broad application space.
As one replacement material for Indirect Zinc Oxide(here shortened for Indirect ZnO), the Nano ZnO obtained more and more attention in rubber industry using than Indirect ZnO. Due to the Nanometer-particle size and large surface area, the Nano ZnO is not only one active agent in rubber formulations, but also used as the role of multi-functional additives. In other foreign countries, the Nanometer materials have been used in rubber industry systematically. Recently, the foreign brand-name tires parsed data shows that the zinc oxide dosage in tire from other foreign countries is lower than domestic tire dosage. According to experts, they used the Nano ZnO in tire. So the market potential of Nano ZnO as one new material is widely favored.

We can see from table one data that there are some relations between physical properties of rubber material with the surface area. From the date of the tensile properties, the Nano ZnO can improve the tensile strength and doesn't reduce the elongation. And when the surface area increases, this trend is even more clear.  But the most clear is that the material abrasion loss reduced and compression fatigue temperature cutting down. It can be seen that when the surface area of Nano ZnO reached to 80m2/g or even more, the Nano ZnO can show excellent properties which the Indirect ZnO doesn't have. When the surface area under 80m2/g, the Nano ZnO has the same properties compared with the Indirect ZnO, but there is still gaps compared with the surface area above 80m2/g.
2. Nano ZnO effects on rubber vulcanized properties
We can see from table one that Nano Zno has large impact on rubber vulcanize. And the rubber crosslink density increased due to the large surface area and high activity. It can be shown not only in the improved torque MH of the vulcanization curve but also in the increased modulus at 300%. In addition, the vulcanization curve tends to shift in the overall time and the Ts2 or T90 delayed compared with the Indirect ZnO. This delay is also different with the different rubber formula system.
3. Nano ZnO effects on rubber physical properties
Also according to table one, we can find that the Nano ZnO effects on the rubber physical properties obviously. In tensile properties,  the modulus at 300% can rise 10% more or less and the elongation at break can basically remain unchanged. Also the Nano ZnO has obvious advantages on reducing the wear loss and improving the wear resistance,  the wear resistance can be reduced 10% or even more. This is due to the nanometer particle size reinforced the rubber vulcanizing. This reinforcement is completely different from the carbon black, because the elongation at break and modulus doesn't reduce. So the Nano ZnO is the ideal material for rubber vulcanizing technically.

The H abstract of the Nano ZnO vulcanized rubber can improve 10% or 20% comparing with the Indirect ZnO. It changed according to the different rubber vulcanizing formula system. The Nanometer particle size effect the adhesion. The rubber molecular and the nylon molecular combined under the help of nanometer particle size. The adhesion between rubber and nylon increased due to the nanometer particle size.
4. Nano ZnO effects on rubber heat properties
We can see from table one that the compression fatigue temperature of Nano ZnO when surface area reached to 80m2/g is 36ºC. And the compression fatigue temperature of Indirect ZnO is 48ºC. Obviously, the heat temperature reduced 25%. It is important for rubber or dynamic products. This result caused by rubber deformation reducing which depend on nanometer particle size reinforced the rubber compound. The carbon black also can lead to, but the rubber modulus is decreasing and the heat temperature increasing which caused by the hysteresis losses enlarged. On the contrary, the Nano ZnO can avoid the disadvantages of carbon black and the heat temperature significantly reduced.
Next, let's see another experimental data of PRA2000 rubber processiong analyzer in rubber vulcanizing formulation from one tire factory. ( the table enclosed in followings)
We can see that , the Nano ZnO has a high elastic modulus and low hysteresis loss. This tendency became more and more clear when the surface area enlarged. This phenomenon coincides to the result of heat temperature experiment. The Nano ZnO improved the life of rubber or dynamic products. Also please be noted that the properties of Nano ZnO reflects in tire carcass rubber, but not significantly. This phenomenon caused by the matrix formula itself high elasticity, low hysteresis, low heat, carbon black filled less and less structure. The heat temperature reduced 10% more or less in rubber matrix formula.
5. Nano ZnO effects on rubber aging properties.
From table one, we can see that the tensile strength and elongation at break which after hot air aging is better than the Indirect ZnO' data. These are caused of high crosslinked network density which leaded by nanometer particle size. The macromolecular material combined with the crosslinked network density at molecular level. This property of Nano ZnO is welcomed by the rubber factory, especially by the sealing rubber industry.

We can see from the data that the Nano ZnO rubber property can reach to 91% after aging. On the contrary, the Indirect ZnO can reach to 82.5% only.
The rubber material property in tire rubber or dynamic products reduced and damaged at last due to the thermal-oxidative aging in use. So improving the rubber material property after aging and delaying this damage, it is important for extending the rubber products service life.
6. Nano ZnO dosage can be reduced.
As we know, the Nano ZnO can be used as one additive in rubber vulcanizing. The dosage is large and it is around five. Due to the heavy specific gravity and high loading level, the Nano ZnO influenced the rubber density heavily. If the specific gravity of the tire rubber or other dynamic rubber products is more larger, the heat and the pressure of the rolling resistance is more higher. It is bad for energy consumption and rubber products service life. Especially, in modern society, people keeps eyes on the product safety and environment protection. Recently, one parsed date from one foreign famous brand tire shows that the dosage of ZnO in rubber vulcanization is lower than the domestic. They use 1.5 or 2 dosage. The domestic factory can not achieve this due to the lag technical. But now the Nano ZnO can achieve and the dosage can be reduced to 1.5 or 2. The Nano ZnO filled this gap. Besides, the reduced dosage of Nano ZnO affects the cost of rubber vulcanizing formula. And the Nano ZnO can reduce the cost of material through decreasing the dosage.

We can see from table four that the tensile strength, heat temperature and aging of Nano ZnO which the dosage reduced to 50%, it doesn't change too much compared with the 5 dosage of Nano ZnO. But other physical property is superior, for example, in reducing abrasion loss, the reduced dosage is superior than 5 dosage, of course, it is better than the Indirect ZnO; in density side, the density of reduced dosage is lower. The reduced dosage Nano ZnO has advantages on decreasing the cost of material and reducing weight of the rubber products. It improved the use performance of rubber. Therefore in Nano ZnO dosage, we suggest the reduction dosage, it is around 3 dosage. The reduced dosage will be depended upon the different rubber vulcanizing formula which from different tire factory. This reduction of dosage is not only for decreasing cost of material, but also for increasing the rubber properties.
7. Nano ZnO impacts on the tire/rubber service life.
Here is the data of indoor mileage test and road test from one tire factory. These tread rubber, shoulder rubber, cushion rubber and rubber cover are made of Nano ZnO vulcanized rubber formula.
